Which states have no income tax in 2026?

Nine states have no income tax on wages in 2026: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. None of them taxes pensions, IRA and 401(k) withdrawals or Social Security. Washington is the one exception for investors: it levies an excise of 7% on long-term capital gains above $278,000 a year, plus 2.9% on the part above $1,000,000 (Washington State Legislature; rules). New Hampshire’s interest and dividends tax ended after 2024 (New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration; rules), and Tennessee’s Hall tax on the same income ended in 2021 (Tennessee Department of Revenue; rules). In each of the nine, a married couple, both 70, with $40,000 of Social Security, a $30,000 private pension and $30,000 of IRA withdrawals ($100,000 in all) owes $0 of state income tax; the $5,087 of federal tax remains.

How do the nine states without an income tax treat retirement income?

All nine leave wages, pensions, IRA and 401(k) withdrawals and Social Security untaxed. They differ on investment income: Washington taxes large long-term capital gains, and New Hampshire and Tennessee once taxed interest and dividends. The last two columns are the engine’s 2026 state tax on a married couple, both 70, with $40,000 of Social Security, a $30,000 private pension and $30,000 of IRA withdrawals ($100,000 in all), and on the same couple with a $400,000 long-term gain on stock (federal tax on them: $5,087 and $69,739, Rev. Proc. 2025-32).

Each state’s page has the detail: the federal tax a retiree there still pays, Roth conversions and the ACA cliff. A state with no income tax raises its money elsewhere, so compare property and sales taxes before you move.

Which states with an income tax charge retirees nothing?

More useful for most retirees than the nine: states that do tax wages but exempt Social Security and much or all of their pension and IRA income. The tax engine ran the same two households through all 42 states with an income tax for 2026:

The households follow the conventions of the retiree income tax by state dataset: Social Security is 40% of income, the rest a private pension and IRA withdrawals in equal parts. A household with more IRA money, wages or investment income, or a younger one, can owe more. Each state’s rules are on its page.

Single, 62: $60,000 ($24,000 Social Security, $18,000 pension, $18,000 IRA). Federal tax on them: $5,087 and $4,111. The Indiana and Maryland figures include a county income tax at the population-weighted average county rate (1.75% and 3.12%).

Which states have no income tax in 2026?

Does Washington have a state income tax?
No tax on wages, pensions, IRA withdrawals or Social Security (Washington Department of Revenue; rules). Washington does tax capital gains: an excise of 7% on long-term capital gains above $278,000 a year, plus 2.9% on the part above $1,000,000 (Washington State Legislature; rules). For a married couple, both 70, with $40,000 of Social Security, a $30,000 private pension and $30,000 of IRA withdrawals ($100,000 in all) plus a $400,000 long-term gain on stock, that excise is $8,540.
Does New Hampshire tax interest and dividends in 2026?
No. Its interest and dividends tax, the only personal income tax it had, was repealed for taxable periods beginning after December 31, 2024, so nothing is due for 2026 (New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration; rules).
Does Tennessee have a state income tax?
No. The Hall income tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed for tax years beginning January 1, 2021, so Tennessee taxes no personal income in 2026 (Tennessee Department of Revenue; rules).
Which states with an income tax charge retirees nothing?
For a married couple, both 70, with $40,000 of Social Security, a $30,000 private pension and $30,000 of IRA withdrawals ($100,000 in all), 14 of the 42 states with an income tax charge $0 in 2026; 10 of them (Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Dakota and Pennsylvania) also charge $0 to a single 62-year-old with $24,000 of Social Security, an $18,000 pension and $18,000 of IRA withdrawals ($60,000 in all). Each state’s exclusions for Social Security and retirement income do the work; the full list is in the table on this page.
