VA combined rating and monthly payment calculator (2026)

Enter each service-connected rating. VA combines them by 38 CFR 4.25, not by adding them: the largest first, each next one applied to what is left, then rounded to the nearest 10.

How it is figured: 38 CFR 4.25 combines the ratings (for example 50% and 30% combine to 65, which rounds to 70%); the bilateral factor for paired limbs (38 CFR 4.26) is not applied here. The payment is VA’s 2026 table above; the first child is in the basic rate and each further child is an added amount. Special monthly compensation is not included (VA SMC rates).

80% VA disability pay 2026: $2,102.15 a month alone, $2,277.15 with a spouse, $2,406.15 with a spouse and one child (VA), or $25,225.80 a year alone.

How VA assigns a rating: the migraine example

Each condition is rated under a diagnostic code in the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities (38 CFR Part 4). Migraine is diagnostic code 8100 in 38 CFR 4.124a, which reads:

Diagnostic code 8100, Migraine — 38 CFR 4.124a
Criteria (quoted)Rating
With very frequent completely prostrating and prolonged attacks productive of severe economic inadaptability50%
With characteristic prostrating attacks occurring on an average once a month over last several months30%
With characteristic prostrating attacks averaging one in 2 months over last several months10%
With less frequent attacks0%

So a migraine rating alone is 0%, 10%, 30% or 50%; 50% is the highest the migraine code allows. In 2026 a 50% rating alone pays $1,132.90 a month (VA). Several ratings combine by the table in 38 CFR 4.25, which is what the calculator above does.

Taxes, retired pay and concurrent receipt

Tax-free. VA benefits “shall be exempt from taxation” under 38 U.S.C. 5301(a). They are not income on the federal return, so they do not count in the federal adjusted gross income that most state returns start from.

Military retired pay. A retiree normally gives up retired pay dollar for dollar to receive VA compensation. Under 10 U.S.C. 1414 (Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay), a retiree with a combined rating of 50% or more is paid both. Combat-Related Special Compensation (10 U.S.C. 1413a) covers combat-related disabilities at any rating. Figure your retired pay and the tax on it → · Which states tax military retirement pay →
