State benefits: property tax and military retirement
| State | Homestead property tax | State income tax on military retired pay |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | Total exemption of the residence homestead for a veteran awarded 100% disability compensation who is rated 100% disabled or unemployable (Tax Code §11.131; Texas Comptroller FAQ). Ratings of 10% or more also get $5,000 to $12,000 off one property under §11.22 (Comptroller). | No state income tax |
| Alabama | A homeowner who is permanently and totally disabled is exempt from all ad valorem taxes on the homestead, with no income or assessed-value limit (Alabama Department of Revenue, homestead exemptions). | Exempt for the four retirees in our study |
VA compensation itself is tax-free federally (38 U.S.C. 5301), so it does not enter the federal adjusted gross income most states start from. Military retired pay is different: our engine-computed study of all 50 states and DC found that, for four sample retirees, 9 states have no income tax at all and 24 more exempt military retired pay in full, while 4 tax it like any pension.
