How to E-File Your 2026 Tax Return
To e-file your 2026 return: prepare it in IRS Free File, Free File Fillable Forms, commercial software or with a paid preparer; sign it with your 2025 AGI (Form 1040 line 11) or an IP PIN; and transmit it once the IRS opens the 2027 filing season. The IRS has not yet announced the opening date (IRS Free File: “check back January 2027”); last season opened January 26, 2026 (IR-2026-02). E-filed refunds take about 3 weeks, mailed returns 6 weeks or more (IRS). The deadline is April 15, 2027.

Signing an e-filed return
- Enter your prior-year AGI (line 11 of your 2025 Form 1040) or last year’s Self-Select PIN. Your online account (Tax Records) or a transcript shows the AGI if you have no copy.
- If your 2025 return has not been processed yet, enter $0. First-time filers over 16 also enter $0.
- An Identity Protection PIN, if you have one, verifies you instead of the AGI or Self-Select PIN (IRS: Validating your electronically filed tax return).

What happened to IRS Direct File
Direct File, the IRS’s own free filing tool, ran in the 2024 and 2025 filing seasons. It was suspended and not offered in the 2026 filing season (NC Department of Revenue), and the IRS’s Direct File page now returns “Page Not Found”. As of November 4, 2026 we found no IRS announcement that it comes back for the 2027 season. The free routes left are IRS Free File (under the AGI limit) and Free File Fillable Forms (any income) (IRS Free File).
Your refund this spring is one year. QuantCalc runs the decades after it — savings, withdrawals, taxes and Medicare surcharges — year by year, free.

- When can I e-file my 2026 tax return?
- When the IRS opens the 2027 filing season. As of November 4, 2026 the IRS has not announced the date; its Free File page says “Please check back January 2027” (IRS Free File). Last season it opened on January 26, 2026, announced on January 8, with IRS Free File accepting returns from January 9 (IR-2026-02). Software lets you prepare a return before then and transmits it when the IRS starts accepting.
- Is e-filing free?
- It can be. IRS Free File gives guided software free to taxpayers under an AGI limit (last season: 2025 AGI of $89,000 or less, IR-2026-05; the limit for the 2027 season is not published yet), and Free File Fillable Forms is free at any income (IRS Free File). Commercial software and paid preparers set their own fees.
- What happened to IRS Direct File?
- It was not offered in the 2026 filing season: the IRS suspended it (NC Department of Revenue), and the IRS’s Direct File page has been taken down. As of November 4, 2026 we found no IRS announcement that it returns for the 2027 season. If you used it before, a summary of that return is in your IRS online account.
- What AGI do I use to sign my e-filed return?
- Your prior-year AGI: line 11 of your 2025 Form 1040, or last year’s Self-Select PIN instead. If your 2025 return has not been processed yet, enter $0; first-time filers over 16 enter $0. If you have an Identity Protection PIN, enter it and it verifies you instead (IRS).
- How long does an e-filed refund take?
- About 3 weeks from the day you e-file, against 6 or more weeks for a mailed return; refunds on returns claiming the earned income tax credit are held by law until mid-February (IRS refund FAQs). The family in the example below gets $7,513 back, so its refund waits for that date however early it files.
- When is the deadline to file 2026 taxes?
- Thursday, April 15, 2027, the 15th day of the fourth month after the year ends (IRC §6072(a)). Form 4868 extends the time to file to October 15, 2027, but not the time to pay: tax owed is still due April 15 (IRS).
