2025 Tax Return: Calculator, Brackets, Late-Filing Deadlines and How to E-File

Your 2025 federal return was due April 15, 2026 (October 15, 2026 with an extension). You can still file it: if you are owed a refund there is no penalty, and you have 3 years from the due date to claim it (IRS). If you owe, the failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties and interest grow every month, with a $525 minimum once the return is more than 60 days late (IRS). The calculator works out your 2025 refund or balance due on the tax engine’s 2025 rules, and what filing now costs.

2025 refund or amount owed (wages)

The 2025 tax comes from a table the tax engine computed with its 2025 rules for this household at every $100 of wages to $100,000 and every $500 to $300,000 (everyone under 65, standard deduction, child tax credit, earned income credit, no other income); your wages are read at the nearest row. Penalties: IRC 6651 as the IRS states them; interest is charged on top and not included. For other income, deductions or a state return, use a full 2025 return.

How to file a 2025 return now

  1. Gather 2025 documents. Missing a W-2 or 1099? The IRS wage and income transcript (Form 4506-T, or Get Transcript online) shows what was reported to it (IRS).
  2. E-file with tax software that supports prior-year returns, or mail a paper 2025 Form 1040 to the address in the 2025 instructions. IRS Free File has closed and only files current-year returns, so it cannot be used for 2025 now; the IRS shows a prior-year e-filed return’s refund status 3 or 4 days after filing.
  3. Pay what you owe with the return, or ask for a payment plan; the penalties stop growing when the tax is paid.
  4. Already filed and need a change? File Form 1040-X; it can be e-filed for the current or two prior tax periods (IRS).

By state, with the refund change: will your 2026 refund be bigger than 2025?

An estimate from QuantCalc’s open tax engine (federal 2.6.0, state 1.26.0) for the 2026 tax year. Not tax advice: your return depends on facts this page does not ask about, so check a move with your tax preparer or custodian before acting. The 2025 figures are the C engine's tax year 2025 rules (the federal API with taxYear 2025), computed when this page was built. Common questions

Can I still file my 2025 tax return?
Yes. The 2025 return was due April 15, 2026 (October 15, 2026 with an extension), but you can file a past-due return at any time, the same way and to the same place as an on-time return (IRS: Filing past due tax returns). If you are owed a refund, there is no penalty for filing late; if you owe, file and pay as soon as you can to stop the penalties growing.
Is there a deadline to claim a 2025 refund?
Yes: you must file within 3 years of the return due date to claim a refund of 2025 withholding or estimated tax, and the same applies to credits such as the earned income credit (IRS). For a 2025 return that is 3 years from April 15, 2026. After that the refund is lost.
What is the penalty for filing a 2025 return late?
If you owe: 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month late, up to 25%, plus 0.5% a month for paying late (the 5% is reduced by the 0.5% in months both apply), plus interest. A return more than 60 days late owes at least $525 or 100% of the unpaid tax, whichever is less (IRS: Failure to file penalty; Failure to pay penalty).
Can I e-file a 2025 return now?
IRS Free File has closed for the season and only takes current-year returns, so it cannot file a past-due 2025 return (IRS Free File). Tax software that supports prior-year returns can still e-file it, and the IRS says a refund status shows 3 or 4 days after you e-file a prior-year return; you can also mail a paper Form 1040.
How do I fix a 2025 return I already filed?
File Form 1040-X. It can be e-filed with tax software for the current or two prior tax periods (IRS: About Form 1040-X).
What were the 2025 tax brackets?
The same seven rates as 2026 — 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% — on lower thresholds: the 37% rate started at $626,350 single and $751,600 married filing jointly (Rev. Proc. 2024-40). The 2025 standard deduction was $15,750 single, $31,500 joint and $23,625 head of household after P.L. 119-21 raised it (IRC §63).
