When will I get my 2026 tax refund?
If you e-file and choose direct deposit, the IRS issues most refunds within 21 days; a paper return takes 6 weeks or more from the day the IRS receives it (IRS: refunds; IR-2026-12). The IRS has not yet announced the day it starts accepting 2026 returns in 2027. Last year it opened the season on Monday, January 26, 2026, announced on January 8, 2026 (IR-2026-02); this page will show the 2027 date once the IRS announces it. By law, a refund on a return that claims the earned income credit or the additional child tax credit cannot be issued before February 15, 2027 (IRC §6402(m)). The IRS has not yet said when it expects most of them to arrive in 2027; in 2026 it expected most by March 2, 2026 for direct-deposit filers with no other issues (IR-2026-12). The deadline to file a 2026 return and pay any tax due is Thursday, April 15, 2027 (IRC §6072(a)).
How much comes back is your withholding and estimated payments minus your 2026 tax. Example: a married couple, 70 and 68, in North Carolina with $48,000 of Social Security, a $24,000 pension, $20,000 of IRA withdrawals and $3,000 of interest owe $2,921 of federal tax; with $6,000 withheld during 2026 their federal refund is $3,079, and their North Carolina refund is $1,642 ($858 of state tax against $2,500 withheld): $4,721 in all.

2026 refund schedule by filing date
The IRS’s published timing applied to six filing dates in 2027: most e-filed returns with direct deposit are refunded within 21 days, and a paper return takes 6 weeks or more after the IRS receives it, so the paper column counts six weeks from the filing date, the earliest the IRS could have it (IRS: refunds). The IRS begins accepting returns on opening day, so for a return prepared earlier the count starts then (in 2026 IRS Free File partners took returns from January 9, ahead of the January 26 opening: IR-2026-02). These are the IRS’s typical times, not a promise: a return with an error, a missing form or an identity check takes longer.

Common questions
- When does the 2027 tax filing season start?
- The IRS has not announced it yet. For 2025 returns it opened on Monday, January 26, 2026 and announced that date on January 8, 2026 (IR-2026-02). You can prepare a return before then, but the IRS begins accepting returns on opening day.
- How long does a tax refund take?
- Most refunds on e-filed returns with direct deposit are issued within 21 days; a paper return takes 6 weeks or more after the IRS receives it (IRS: refunds). A return that needs a correction or an identity check takes longer.
- Why is my refund held until mid-February?
- If your return claims the earned income credit or the additional child tax credit, the law does not allow the IRS to issue the refund before February 15, 2027 (IRC §6402(m)), even if you file in January.
- When is the 2027 tax deadline?
- Thursday, April 15, 2027 for 2026 returns (IRC §6072(a)). An extension gives more time to file, not to pay.
- How much will my refund be?
- Your 2026 withholding and estimated payments minus your 2026 tax. In the example, a retired couple with $6,000 withheld and $2,921 of federal tax get $3,079 back. The calculator on this page figures your own from your income and what was withheld.
- How do I check where my refund is?
- Use the IRS’s Where’s My Refund? tool: an e-filed return shows about 24 hours after the IRS accepts it, a paper return about 4 weeks after you mail it (IRS: refunds). Your state has its own refund status tool on its revenue department’s website.
