Virginia Property Tax Relief for Seniors 2026
Every statewide property tax break Virginia offers older homeowners that we could confirm on an official page: the type of relief, the age and income limits, the amount, how to apply and the deadline.
Virginia has no statewide homestead exemption, assessment freeze, circuit-breaker credit or rebate for seniors; instead, state law (Code of Va. § 58.1-3210 et seq.) lets each county, city or town adopt by ordinance its own real estate tax exemption, deferral, or combination for owners aged 65+ (and, at local option, permanently disabled owners), with the locality setting the income and net-worth limits and amounts. Localities may limit relief to tax increases above the amount owed in the year the owner turned 65 (a freeze-style option), and deferred taxes are paid without penalty, may accrue interest of no more than 8% a year, and become a lien due on sale, gift, or within one year of the last qualified owner's death.
