Maine Property Tax Relief for Seniors 2026

Every statewide property tax break Maine offers older homeowners that we could confirm on an official page: the type of relief, the age and income limits, the amount, how to apply and the deadline.

Maine has no senior-only homestead exemption; every permanent resident who has owned a Maine homestead for 12 months gets a $25,000 exemption (restated in 36 M.R.S. §683-A from April 1, 2027). The main senior benefits are the refundable Property Tax Fairness Credit, capped at $2,000 for filers 65+ (benefit base up to $4,000), and the Property Tax Deferral Program for homeowners 65+ or disabled with income under $80,000 and liquid assets under $100,000 ($150,000 for multiple owners). The senior Property Tax Stabilization (freeze) Program applied only to the property tax year beginning April 1, 2023 (36 M.R.S. ch. 908-B) and is not available for 2026. (sources)
