No Tax on Tips Calculator 2026
Enter your 2026 wages and your tips. The tax engine works out how much of your tips you can deduct, applies the $25,000 cap and the income phase-out, and shows the federal income tax the deduction saves on the return you file in 2027.

Calculate your tips deduction
This calculator prices one deduction. Your whole 2026 return, with the tips deduction, the rest of your income, your children and what was withheld, ending in a refund or an amount owed: tax refund calculator 2026 (free: your federal and state refund or amount owed) → The same return line by line, every Form 1040 line and Schedule 1-A: the 2026 Return Preview.
An estimate from QuantCalc’s open tax engine (federal 2.5.1, state 1.17.1) for the 2026 tax year. Not tax advice: your return depends on facts this page does not ask about, so check a move with your tax preparer or custodian before acting. Federal only: the state tax engine does not model this deduction, and states treat tips under their own rules. How the engine computes each line, with its official source: federal, state.
How does no tax on tips work in 2026?
Tips are still taxed when you receive them: tips you report to your employer are wages, with federal income tax withheld and Social Security and Medicare tax due (IRS Pub. 531). The change is a deduction on your federal return for qualified tips — cash and card tips, including tips shared through a tip pool, received in an occupation that customarily and regularly received tips before 2025 — of up to $25,000 per return, less $100 for every $1,000 of modified AGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint), for 2025 through 2028 (IRC §224). Example: a single 28-year-old server earning $42,000, of which $15,000 was tips, deducts $15,000, which cuts the 2026 federal tax from $2,863 to $1,093: $1,770 saved, 11.8% of the tips.

The cap, the phase-out and married filing separately
The cap is $25,000 per return, joint or not: a married couple with $30,000 of tips between them deducts $25,000 and saves $3,000. Above $150,000 of modified AGI ($300,000 joint) the deduction falls by $100 for each $1,000 over (§224(b)(2); Schedule 1-A counts full $1,000s): a single filer with $180,000 of wages including $20,000 of tips is $30,000 over, loses $3,000 and deducts $17,000. Married filing separately, no deduction is allowed (§224(f)): the same server’s deduction would be $0. The return must carry your Social Security number (§224(e)).
Which tips qualify?
Tips qualify only if they are paid voluntarily, in an amount the customer decides, and not negotiated (§224(d)(2)(A)) — service charges and automatic gratuities added to the bill are not qualified tips — and only in an occupation on the Treasury’s list of occupations that customarily and regularly received tips on or before December 31, 2024; the list and the definition are in the final regulations. Tips earned in a specified service trade or business, such as health, law, financial services or the performing arts, do not qualify (§224(d)(2)(B)). The tips must appear on a Form W-2, 1099 or other statement furnished to you, or be reported by you on Form 4137 (§224(a)). Self-employed tips are deductible only up to the business’s net income from that work (§224(c)), and self-employment tax is still due on them. The deduction comes after AGI, like the standard deduction (IRC §63(b)): you take it whether you itemize or not, and your AGI does not change.
Common questions
- Are tips tax-free in 2026?
- Not when you receive them: reported tips are still wages, so income tax is withheld and Social Security and Medicare tax apply (IRS Pub. 531). On your return you deduct qualified tips of up to $25,000 (IRC §224). A single server with $15,000 of tips in $42,000 of wages saves $1,770 of federal tax.
- How much of my tips can I deduct?
- All your qualified tips up to $25,000 per return, reduced by $100 for each $1,000 of modified AGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint) (§224(b)). A married couple with $30,000 of tips deducts $25,000.
- Does the tips deduction lower my AGI?
- No. It is taken after adjusted gross income, so your AGI stays the same (in the single example, $42,000) while your taxable income falls by the deduction (IRC §63(b)).
- Can I claim it married filing separately?
- No. A married person must file a joint return to take it (§224(f)): married filing separately the deduction is $0.
- Which jobs count for no tax on tips?
- Occupations that customarily and regularly received tips on or before December 31, 2024, as listed by the Treasury in the final regulations — for example food and beverage service, hospitality, personal services, and app-based delivery and rideshare work. Tips in a specified service trade or business do not count (§224(d)).
- Do states tax tips?
- States set their own rules for tips, and this calculator does not model them: the figures here are federal only.
- How many years does no tax on tips last?
- Tax years 2025 through 2028: no deduction is allowed for a tax year beginning after December 31, 2028 (§224(h)).
