Prorated salary calculator

Starting or leaving a salaried job part way through the year? Enter the yearly salary and your first and last day.

How a prorated salary is calculated

A prorated salary is the yearly salary times the share of the year you work. There are two common ways to measure that share; your offer letter, contract or payroll policy says which one your employer uses.

Worked example. A $60,000 salary, starting March 16, 2026 and working to December 31, 2026: that is 291 of 365 calendar days, so $60,000 × 291 ÷ 365 = $47,835.62 by calendar days; and 209 of 261 workdays, so $60,000 × 209 ÷ 261 = $48,045.98 by workdays. Both figures are before tax.

Common questions

How do you convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you are paid in a year. Full time is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $52,000. A quick check: double the hourly rate and add three zeros ($25 → $50,000), which is 2,000 hours.
How much is a 30-hour-a-week job a year?
Hourly rate × 30 × 52, or 1,560 hours. At $20 an hour that is $31,200; at $25, $39,000. Put 30 in the hours box of the calculator above for the after-tax figure.
How is a prorated salary worked out?
The yearly salary times the share of the year worked. By calendar days, the days from your first to your last day divided by 365 (366 in a leap year); by workdays, the Monday-to-Friday days worked divided by the workdays in the year (261 in 2026). Employers and contracts use either method; the calculator shows both.
Are these figures before or after tax?
Both. The yearly and monthly columns are before tax. The take-home column subtracts 2026 federal income tax (Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the employee’s 7.65% Social Security and Medicare tax (IRC §3101); pick a state in the calculator to subtract state income tax too.
